PS5 HDMI port broken: 6 signs it's the port (not your TV)

Black screen, flickering, or no signal on your PS5? Before you assume it's the TV, the cable, or the display settings, check these six signs that point specifically to the HDMI port on the console — and why getting the diagnosis right saves you money.

A bent pin inside the HDMI port is one of the most common causes of signal loss on PS5.

A PS5 that shows a black screen or 'no signal' is one of the more common repair requests we get — and the frustrating part is that the same symptom can point to three completely different causes: your TV, the HDMI cable, or the port on the console itself. Getting the diagnosis wrong wastes a week trying cables and settings that won't fix anything.

Here are six signs that point specifically to the HDMI port on the PS5, not to the display or the cable.

Sign 1: no signal on one TV, works on another

Plug the PS5 into a different screen — a monitor, a second TV, a projector. If it works there, you might assume the problem is the first TV. But the test to run before that conclusion is this: try the second TV with the same HDMI cable and the same input setting. If it works perfectly with the same cable on a different screen, the original display or its HDMI input is the issue, not the PS5 port.

If the PS5 shows no signal on every screen and every cable you try, the failure is on the console side. The HDMI port is the first suspect because it is the only part of the output chain that is physically on the console.

Sign 2: image drops to 1080p or 720p by itself

A PS5 set to 4K output that suddenly reports only 1080p or 720p to the TV — without any change in settings — is a classic early sign of HDMI port damage. The high-speed lanes in an HDMI 2.1 port are the first to fail when a pin is bent or the connector housing is cracked, because 4K60 HDR needs all of them. The console falls back to a lower resolution because it can negotiate a signal at that bandwidth, even though the physical connection is already compromised.

You can confirm this in the PS5 settings under Screen and Video. If the detected resolution keeps cycling between 4K and 1080p, or if the 4K option is greyed out even on a 4K display, the port is the likely cause.

Sign 3: cable wiggles to restore the picture

If applying slight upward or sideways pressure to the HDMI cable at the PS5 end brings the picture back, the connector housing is damaged or the solder joints are cracked. This is positional — the pins make contact only when the cable is held in a specific angle. Do not use the console in this state. Every movement micro-fractures the remaining joints, and what is now a €140 port replacement becomes a motherboard-level repair if the pads lift off the board.

Sign 4: console fell or was yanked by the cable

The HDMI port on the PS5 is surface-mounted. The connector housing is physically strong, but the solder pads underneath it are not rated for lateral force. If the console was dropped, if someone tripped over the cable and the console was pulled off a shelf, or if the cable was yanked out at an angle instead of straight, the internal retention tabs may be intact while the solder pads underneath have already cracked or lifted. You won't see the damage from outside.

NOTE
The yanked-cable failure pattern

We see this regularly after a child or a pet pulls the cable, or after the console was knocked off a TV unit. Externally the port looks completely fine — the shell isn't cracked, the pins look straight. Internally two or three solder pads have fractured. The result is intermittent signal: works for five minutes, then drops. Reflowing the existing joints doesn't fix it — the pads need to be cleaned and the port replaced.

Sign 5: you can see bent or missing pins

Shine a torch into the HDMI port and look at the row of pins. An HDMI 2.1 connector has 19 pins arranged in two rows. If any pin is noticeably bent inward, pushed sideways, or missing, the port needs replacement — bent pins cannot be reliably straightened without the risk of snapping them at the base, and a missing pin means at least one of the signal lanes is already gone.

Bent pins most often happen when the cable is inserted at a slight angle, or when the console is stored in a bag and something presses into the port opening. The PS5 dust covers that came in the box are there for exactly this reason.

Sign 6: three or more HDMI cables, same result

A single bad HDMI cable is common. Two bad cables is possible if they were bought from the same budget batch. Three separate cables — especially if one is a premium cable from a reliable brand — and the same result on all three? That eliminates the cable as the variable. The remaining variables are the HDMI input on the TV, the TV itself, or the PS5 port. By the time you are on cable number three, it is worth plugging the console into a completely different display before concluding.

What happens if you leave it

A partially failed HDMI port doesn't stabilise on its own. The usual progression: intermittent signal → no signal at 4K → no signal at all. If the housing is cracked and you keep plugging and unplugging, the remaining pins will eventually bend or break. If the solder pads are already lifting and you use the console on a positional connection, the pads will detach from the board.

Once a pad lifts off the PCB, the repair leaves the straightforward bracket — port replacement for €140 — and enters the complex bracket — pad bridging, trace repair, sometimes a via fix. That work can cost €250–400+ and takes longer. The same repair done while the pads are still on the board takes 90 minutes.

Repair or replace?

A PS5 HDMI port replacement is a fixed cost at our bench: €140, same day if you book before noon Monday–Friday, 90-day warranty on the port and the joint. The repair price is €140 regardless of which PS5 model you have — disc edition, digital edition, slim, or the original launch console.

A new PS5 disc edition lists for around €500. If the rest of the console is working and the issue is only the port, replacing the port is the straightforward call. If the console was already failing in other ways, or if diagnostics suggest the issue goes deeper than the port, we tell you that before touching anything — diagnostics are always free.

You can book the repair at /en/ps5-hdmi-repair. We cover Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, and Kerava — Andrei picks up at your door and returns the console once the work is done.

FAQ

Can I use a PS5 without HDMI — via capture card or USB?+

No. The PS5 has no USB video output. The only video-out is the HDMI port. You can't mirror or capture the screen without a working HDMI connection.

Will a USB-C to HDMI adapter work on the PS5 charge port?+

No. The PS5 USB-C port is a charge and data port only — it doesn't carry DisplayPort Alt Mode, so a USB-C to HDMI adapter produces nothing. The only video path is the dedicated HDMI 2.1 port on the rear.

Can the HDMI port be repaired instead of replaced?+

Bending pins back is sometimes possible on a very light bend with a dentist's pick, but it is not reliable and often makes things worse. If the housing is cracked or the pads are lifting, the only reliable fix is a full port replacement — the damaged port is desoldered and a new original-spec part is soldered in. That is what we do for every repair.

Is the PS5 HDMI port a standard part?+

The PS5 uses an HDMI 2.1 Type A connector with a specific pin pitch and housing height. It is not a universal off-the-shelf part — you need an original-spec replacement, not a generic connector from a components catalogue. Generic ports fit physically but fail the 4K HDR handshake within weeks.
