PS5 bent HDMI pin: can you fix it yourself? (Honest answer)

A slightly bent contact in the PS5 HDMI port can sometimes be eased back with a toothpick. How to tell if yours can, how to try it safely, and when to stop.

You can sometimes fix a bent PS5 HDMI pin yourself: if one contact is only slightly tilted and the console had a picture until recently, easing it back with a wooden toothpick under good light often works. If a contact is folded flat, snapped off, or the console was dropped or pulled by the cable, a home attempt is more likely to make things worse — that is a port replacement.

Before you touch the port, make sure it really is the port. A black screen more often comes from the TV input, the cable or a setting; six signs it's the PS5 HDMI port walks through the checks.

NOTE
Key takeaways

Only a slight sideways tilt on one or two contacts is a realistic home fix. Unplug the console, use a wooden toothpick, bright light and magnification, and move the contact in small steps. Stop at the first sign of resistance, a snapped contact or a second bent contact. Never plug a cable in until you've checked no contact touches its neighbour. A pin that looks straight can still be off by a fraction of a millimetre.

Inside the port: what a bent pin is

A bent HDMI pin is one of the 19 thin spring contacts inside the port that has been pushed out of line, sideways towards its neighbour or down towards the tongue it sits on. The contacts sit in two staggered rows, very close together, and each one only works if it presses against its matching contact on the plug.

HDMI Type A plugs have no latch; they are held by friction alone. Most bent contacts come from pushing the plug in at an angle, so the edge of the plug catches a contact before the plug is straight, or from something pressing into the opening while the console travels in a bag. Sometimes one contact is bent; a plug forced in crooked can bend two or three in a row.

NOTE
Bent pin vs. cracked joint

A bent pin is a contact that has moved but is still firmly attached. A cracked joint is where the connector meets the motherboard — the connector is soldered to the board and the joints can crack when the cable is yanked. From outside the two can look the same. Levering on a contact whose base is already loose makes the damage worse, which is why the history of the console matters before you start.

Home fix: when it's realistic

A home attempt is realistic when all of these are true:

  • —The bend is small and you can see it — the contact is slightly tilted, not folded flat
  • —The console had a picture until recently, so the joints underneath are probably intact
  • —Nobody has tried to straighten it yet
  • —You have steady hands, good light and some kind of magnification

Leave it to a repair shop when the console was dropped or yanked by the cable (the joints may be cracked), when a contact is folded flat or pushed down onto the tongue, when a contact is missing, or when a first attempt has already made it worse.

Tools that help, and what to avoid

A wooden toothpick is the right first tool: soft enough not to scratch or short anything, and firm enough to move a thin contact a little. A fine plastic spudger or a jeweller's probe gives more control, but a metal tip can slip onto a neighbouring contact, so use it only if the toothpick can't reach.

  • —A bright light you can angle — a small LED torch, or a phone torch held by a second person
  • —Magnification: reading glasses at the very least, a 10× loupe or a cheap USB microscope is much better
  • —Wooden toothpicks, several — the tip blunts quickly
  • —A photo of the port taken before you start, so you can compare

Avoid metal tweezers (too wide, easy to bridge two contacts), compressed air aimed into the port (it can push debris further in), and any heat — there is nothing to melt or soften here, and heat on a plastic connector only does damage.

Straightening a pin, step by step

Straightening a bent HDMI pin is slow, small movements with the console unplugged, checking under magnification after every push.

  • —Switch the PS5 off fully and unplug the power cable and every other cable.
  • —Lay the console on a stable surface with the back towards you and the light and magnifier set up so you can see the bent contact clearly.
  • —Take a photo and work out exactly which way the contact is bent: left, right or down.
  • —Rest the toothpick against the contact on the side it has moved to, and push gently in the direction it needs to go. Hold for a couple of seconds.
  • —Take the toothpick out and look again. The contact should have moved a little. Repeat in small steps rather than trying to get it straight in one go.
  • —When it lines up with its neighbours, check from two angles that it doesn't touch the contact next to it.

If you feel resistance, stop. Either the contact is bent right at its base, where more force can crack it, or the port walls are limiting your angle. Forcing it is how a bent contact becomes a broken one.

Stop signs: when to hand it over

Stop and don't try again if any of these happen:

  • —The contact moved a little, then stopped with resistance
  • —The contact snapped off — a loose piece inside the port can short other contacts
  • —You can no longer tell whether it's straight
  • —A second contact is now bent — the toothpick slipped
  • —The picture was intermittent before and is now gone completely

At this point the port needs a repair shop, and the less it has been disturbed, the simpler that repair is. A snapped contact or a cracked joint means a new port.

Port replacement: what a repair shop does

A repair shop first looks at the port under magnification: how many contacts are bent, whether any are bent at the base, and whether someone has already worked on it. A single, slightly bent contact on an otherwise healthy port can be straightened. Anything more — a snapped contact, a cracked housing, cracked joints — means replacing the port.

Replacing the port is a full teardown and board-level soldering: the console has to be completely dismantled and the work needs microsoldering skills. The old connector is desoldered, the pads cleaned and a new port soldered in, then the picture is tested at 4K. What drives the price, and what to ask before you agree to it, is in PS5 HDMI port repair cost in Finland.

FAQ

My pin looks straight now but there's still no picture. Why?+

A contact can look straight to the eye and still sit a fraction of a millimetre off — enough to lose the high-speed signal or drop out. The joint under it may also have cracked, either in the original accident or while straightening. Work through Sony's no-picture checklist and try Safe Mode's Change Video Output at a lower resolution. A picture there but not at 4K points to a weak contact.

Can I plug a cable in to test it?+

Only after you've checked under magnification that the contact is straight and doesn't touch either neighbour. Two contacts touching can short two signals together, and you don't want to find that out with the console switched on.

Does Sony's guarantee cover a bent HDMI pin?+

Usually not. Sony's European guarantee lasts one year and excludes accident, negligence and misuse, and a contact bent by a plug going in crooked is physical damage. If the port failed on its own on a new console, without any force, ask the seller or Sony first.

The pins look fine but there's no signal. What's wrong?+

Then the fault is more likely under the port than in it: joints between the connector and the board that cracked when the console fell or the cable was yanked. Reflowing them in place sometimes brings the picture back for a while; a connector that has been levered loose is usually replaced, because the joints underneath can't be properly inspected or cleaned with the port still on.
