PS5 regular cleaning vs repair — which is actually cheaper?

A PS5 has no replaceable APU: the chip is soldered to the motherboard permanently. When it dies from heat, the whole motherboard gets replaced — that starts at €380. An annual clean costs about a fifth of that. Here is the honest math, and the places where it breaks down.

The PS5 is built so that when its main chip dies from heat, you can't fix it at a single point. If the APU has degraded from overheating, you don't repair the chip — you replace the whole motherboard, and in Finland that starts at €380. A preventive clean with fresh liquid metal costs four to five times less. Most customers only learn this math once the dead console is already on the bench and there is effectively no choice left.

Why a PS5 can't be repaired at the component level

The PS5's APU is a single-chip AMD design: an eight-core Zen 2 CPU and an RDNA 2 GPU on the same die. The chip is soldered to the motherboard with a BGA ball array — around two thousand contacts under the belly of the chip, straight onto the substrate. Sony does not supply the APU as a separate part — not to authorised service centres, not to end users. AMD makes the die exclusively for Sony and never releases it into distribution. If the APU is dead, there simply is no chip to swap in.

In that situation the real "repair" means sourcing a donor board and moving the APU onto it together with the power connector, the disc drive and the SSD slot. A used motherboard in Finland and the EU currently runs €300–450, plus €80–120 of labour, plus the risk that the donor carries the same quiet thermal decay. Every six months or so a customer comes back with the same story: "I bought a used board, it lasted four months, then CE-108255-1 again."

Videos that reball a PS5 APU show the chip being heated and resoldered onto the same board — that's a gamble with bad odds. You can restore the solder balls; you can't restore a die that has taken heat damage. In our 2024–2025 data, fewer than 20% of reballs succeed, and the ones that do last 4–6 months on average.

What a clean and a repair actually cost

Dry numbers from our 2025 bench. A preventive PS5 clean with fresh liquid metal — €89; replacing the foam dam when needed adds work but not price. The difference is about fourfold, and that's before you count the two-week downtime waiting for a donor to arrive.

The second column is the prices we actually charge customers. The third is what we see across 187 PS5 services from last year. If you get through five years on two or three cleans, you've spent €178–267. If you skip all five years — you're looking at a €380+ repair on the bench, or the decision to buy a new console.

Which components die from heat

A PS5's thermal death isn't "one chip burned out". It's the degradation of a group of components under the same heatsink. Several parts are suspect, and they all sit on the same board that nobody sells separately:

  • AMD APU — the main die; the first casualty if the liquid metal has slid off the dam or the paste has dried out
  • GDDR6 memory chips — eight of them around the APU; their solder joints are stressed by thermal cycling
  • The APU's VRM stages — the coils and MOSFETs that lose capacity under insufficient cooling and can no longer hold voltage at peak load
  • The disc drive controller (on the BD model) — its own chip, also soldered, also replaceable only with a donor board
  • The SSD controller — further from the heatsink but in the same hot zone; one of the paths by which a console starts losing data on an expansion NVMe drive

When we say "the PS5 died from heat", 90% of the time it's the APU. The remaining 10% is the VRM or the GDDR. All three cases equally require a board replacement. We can repair individual SMD components around a living APU; a dead APU we cannot. Nobody can — not for lack of trying, but because there are physically no new APUs on the market.

Why you can't 'just resolder the APU'

A technical resolder is possible — a BGA station, solder paste and a hot-air gun all exist. What you can't do is swap the die for a new one. The same APU goes back onto the same board with the same VRM. If the die died from heat, the solder balls were the secondary problem; a few months later the same story starts over. In our experience a PS5 reball "repair" buys three to six months, it doesn't hand back working hardware.

Signs of an approaching APU death

Five symptoms we see on consoles that reach us a week or two before total failure. None of them is cheap to fix on its own, and they usually arrive as a bundle:

  • Ray-traced games start showing artefacts — flickering squares, wrong shadows; on lighter games the console still feels normal
  • Random reboots while a game is loading, with no error message — the APU can't hold a stable state at peak load
  • Error CE-108255-1 "An error has occurred with the PS5's system software" keeps coming back, even after reinstalling the system from a clean USB drive
  • The fan ramps to 80–100% right after boot, before any game is even opened — the system is reading a hot sensor while still idle
  • A high-pitched coil whine from the power-supply side, loudest on the PS5 boot screen — the VRM is starting to collapse

If two or more of these already match

Don't drag out the trip to the workshop. At this stage a clean can still save the console — if the die is alive, we replace the dam, apply fresh liquid metal, the temperature drops 12–18 °C, and the APU returns to its working range. The longer the console runs on this edge, the higher the chance that on the next power-on it no longer posts.

When a repair is still worth it

A clean and servicing are worth it as long as the APU is alive. If the console is on our bench and the APU holds 70–85 °C under load, everything is repairable — we handle the fan, the dam, the thermal interface and the GDDR joints. The bill rarely goes over €200, and the console runs like new for another few years.

The line runs here: if the APU is roasting at 95 °C+ on nominal cooling, with artefacts and random reboots in games — even with fresh paste and a clean heatsink — the die has degraded. A board replacement becomes the only real route. The only cheaper option than that is a new Slim, which starts at €499 in Finland and arrives without your saves and without your discs.

The five-year math

The most honest way to compare is to add up the cost of ownership over five years across three scenarios. Prices in euros, averaged from our 2025 orders; the cost of two weeks' downtime isn't included, but if there's one television in the household, that's worth keeping in mind too.

Scenarios 1 and 2 land close to the emergency repair on cost — but in the first two you have a working console at the end of year five, while in the third you pay the same amount for a restoration riding on a donor die whose remaining life you don't know. When we tell a customer that "a clean is the cheapest line in a PS5's cost of ownership", it isn't marketing — it's the difference between €585 and €1000+ once you count downtime and parts logistics.

What we don't recommend

Don't wait for it to "finally stop turning on". By the time the console shuts down under load once every half hour, the APU has already spent weeks roasting in the 95 °C+ range, and every launch of a demanding game is a lottery. Bringing us a console with a loud fan but no artefacts in games yet — that's €89 and planned work. Bringing it in with a CE-108255-1 code after two weeks of "let's try to play a bit longer" — that's from €380 or a new console.

FAQ

Can't you just buy the PS5's APU separately?+

No. Sony doesn't sell the APU as a part — not to repair shops, not to retailers. AMD makes the die exclusively for Sony and never releases it into sales channels. The only APUs in circulation are pulled from already-broken or water-damaged consoles; buying those blind, without a donor-board diagnosis, is reckless. So in practice "APU repair" = "motherboard replacement".

How long does an uncleaned PS5 usually last?+

Across 187 services in 2025, the average age of a PS5 at the moment of APU thermal death was 38 months in an ordinary flat and 22 months in a home with a long-haired pet or a smoker. These are medians: one console in ten dies before two years, one in ten lasts past five years with no servicing. A lottery it's cheaper not to play.

Does Sony replace motherboards after the warranty is up?+

No. After the 12-month warranty, Sony Finland moves the case to a paid refurbishment — a flat rate around €250, but it is not a board replacement and not an APU repair. In practice you get back a different refurbished console with the same unknown usage history, and the thermal-death counter simply resets to zero.

Which makes more sense — repairing an old PS5 or buying a used one?+

If your console arrived with APU thermal death, a board replacement is €380–480. A used PS5 on Tori with no donor history is €280–350 after a couple of years of ordinary flat use. On pure arithmetic the used one is cheaper; but you keep your own SSD, your own saves, your own disc drive and your own power supply. The decision often comes down not to price but to downtime — a donor board takes two weeks, a listing you can buy in an evening.

If I've already skipped three years of cleaning — is it too late?+

No, as long as the console still powers on and survives a long gaming session without shutting down. On the bench we see the APU alive: if the temperature holds at 85–90 °C under load, replacing the dam and the liquid metal returns the console to normal. If it's already 95 °C+ with artefacts, that train has left — the conversation moves to a board replacement. Half an hour of diagnostics is free with us and gives a clear answer.
