Steam Deck stick drift — check SteamOS first, then swap the stick: three screws, no soldering

Steam Deck stick drift: update SteamOS, run the input test, wipe dry. A deadzone only hides it. The fix is a new stick — no soldering — then calibration.

Steam Deck stick drift is a thumbstick sending input while nobody touches it: the camera or the character moves on its own. Before you blame the stick, update SteamOS and run Valve's input test — in 2022 a firmware update broke the thumbstick deadzone, and a Steam client update fixed it. A crumb can also stop the stick returning to centre. If neither explains it, the track inside the stick has worn, and the fix is a Steam Deck stick swap. On a Deck that takes a screwdriver, not a soldering iron.

NOTE
Key takeaways

Run Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs and install any pending SteamOS update first — in March 2022 Valve fixed a deadzone bug that a firmware update had caused. The deadzone slider makes the Deck ignore small movements: it hides minor drift and does nothing to the stick. Clean around the sticks with a dry cloth only; Valve rules out isopropyl alcohol and other liquids there. A replacement stick is a module on its own board, held by a ribbon cable and three screws — no soldering. LCD Decks take Type A or Type B sticks (Controller ID MEDA or MHDA), and every new stick needs calibrating with thumbstick_cal.

What wears inside a Steam Deck stick

Drift is the Deck reading stick movement that isn't there. iFixit puts it plainly: "your controls keep veering to the left, even when you aren't touching anything." The point is that the input comes with your thumbs off the stick.

Each Deck stick reads position the same way a DualSense stick does. As you tilt it, small metal wipers move over a resistive material, and the Deck turns the voltage they produce into direction. Over time that material wears away, iFixit explains, and the voltage at rest stops reading as centre. Why this kind of stick wears is covered in our guide to controller stick drift.

The sticks also sense touch. Valve's tech specs list "2 x full-size analog sticks with capacitive touch", so the Deck knows when a thumb rests on a stick. That matters when you buy a replacement.

Restart, update, then run Valve's input test

Rule out a glitch and old software before you suspect the hardware. These steps cost nothing and come from iFixit's checklist and Valve's troubleshooting guide.

  • —Restart the Deck, in case the drift is a one-off.
  • —Check for and install pending updates. SteamOS updates are in Settings.
  • —Run the test: Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. Complete the tests and exit with a long press of B.
  • —For a live view, open Settings > Controller > (Details >) Calibration & Advanced Settings > Joysticks and press Y. A drifting stick shows motion while you aren't touching it.

Updating comes first for a reason. In early 2022 a firmware update broke the thumbstick deadzone, and Valve's client update of 1 March 2022 lists the fix: "Fixed thumbstick deadzone regression from a recent firmware update." Valve has changed deadzone defaults since, twice in May 2024 alone. That is why checking for updates stays step one.

Deadzone slider: it hides drift, it doesn't fix it

The deadzone sets how far a stick has to move before the Deck counts it as input. Raise it and a slight drift stops showing. The stick itself stays exactly as worn as it was.

Valve added the setting on 31 March 2022, on a new Calibration and Advanced Settings screen with deadzones for the left and right sticks. It lives at Settings > Controller > (Details >) Calibration & Advanced Settings > Joysticks. On current SteamOS the Details step may sit in between, per Valve's 2026 release notes. iFixit says what the slider is for: you can change it "to combat a stick with some wobble, or other minor drifting."

Games have their own layouts too. Open the game's page in the Library and select the gamepad icon; the layout editor has had a deadzone visualiser since April 2022. Either way the deadzone is a mask. When it no longer covers the drift, iFixit's next steps are cleaning and then a new stick.

Cleaning: a dry cloth on the outside, nothing wet

Around the sticks, use a dry cloth and nothing else. Valve's guide is explicit: no isopropyl alcohol or other liquids around the input wells — buttons, trackpads and thumbsticks — "Use a dry cloth only." Advice to use a damp cloth, or to spray cleaner under the cap with the stick still in the Deck, contradicts that. Follow Valve.

A crumb can be the whole problem. iFixit's checklist includes debris stuck under the stick that stops it returning to centre, and with the Deck closed, a dry wipe around the well is the only cleaning Valve allows.

iFixit's deeper clean is a different job. It starts by taking the stick board out of the Deck, following the replacement guide, and only then sprays residue-free electronics cleaner into the stick — outside the Deck. That is the same disassembly as a replacement, and iFixit adds that "even cleaning may be a temporary fix." Between sessions, keep the Deck in its case: Valve recommends it to keep dust out.

Replacing a Steam Deck stick: no soldering, but the right type

A Steam Deck stick is a complete module on its own small board, replaced as one unit. It plugs into a ribbon-cable (ZIF) connector and is held by three screws — no soldering, unlike a DualShock 4 stick. iFixit rates the job Moderate on both models.

LCD Decks: Type A or Type B

LCD Decks shipped with one of two stick models. They look nearly identical, but capacitive touch only works with the right one. Find the Controller ID under Settings > System, in the component lookup Valve added for cases like this: an ID starting with MEDA needs Type A, one starting with MHDA needs Type B. The OLED has a single type for each side.

Before you open the Deck

  • —Run the battery below 25 % — a charged lithium-ion polymer battery is dangerous if punctured. That is iFixit's stick guide; its battery guides ask for under 5 %, because the battery itself comes out.
  • —Put the Deck into battery storage mode in the BIOS, as Valve recommends.
  • —Take out the microSD card. Left in, it can snap in half when the back cover comes off.
  • —Once the back is off, disconnect the battery first — both iFixit guides do.

iFixit's LCD stick guide covers the rest, step by step. The sticks iFixit sells are genuine Valve parts from the official Steam Deck supply chain. Valve's parts have been on sale at iFixit since May 2022, and Valve says it designed the Deck to be repairable.

Calibrating the new stick with thumbstick_cal

Calibrate every new stick before you play: type thumbstick_cal into Konsole in Desktop Mode. iFixit says Valve recommends it, and warns that without it the Deck keeps using the old stick's values, which could vary enough to create drift on a brand-new one. iFixit's calibration guide:

  • —In Desktop Mode, open Konsole and type thumbstick_cal.
  • —Make sure both sticks are untouched and centred, then press Enter.
  • —Rotate each stick through a full circle, twice.
  • —The terminal should report "Thumbstick calibration successful."

What calibration can't do is give a worn track back. Valve's recommendation and iFixit's guide are both written for replacement sticks, and iFixit's answer to drift that survives cleaning, or comes back, is a new stick. Third-party guides mention a calibrate button in Game Mode; no Valve source we read describes one for the Deck's own sticks, so thumbstick_cal is the method to trust.

FAQ

Can you fix Steam Deck stick drift without opening it?+

Sometimes. A software fault, like the 2022 deadzone bug, goes away with an update. A crumb that stops the stick returning to centre may be the cause; Valve allows only a dry cloth around the stick. The deadzone slider hides minor drift. A worn track can't be reached from outside: iFixit's deeper clean and the replacement both start by taking the stick board out.

Does Valve fix Steam Deck stick drift under warranty?+

Valve's repair centres fix faults covered by warranty free of charge. For damage, or once the warranty has run out, they offer to replace and calibrate a stick for a fee. Valve's 2022 announcement names no countries and no price. The announcement doesn't say which faults count, so ask Steam Support whether your Deck's drift is covered and whether the service reaches you.

Is there a Steam Deck stick calibration command?+

Yes: thumbstick_cal, in Konsole in Desktop Mode. It sets up a new stick; it doesn't repair a worn one.

When Steam Deck stick drift stops being a home fix

When the drift survives an update and a dry clean, the stick has to be replaced. The deadzone and calibration can't change what has worn inside it. If the Deck is still under warranty, ask Valve first — the FAQ above has what its repair centres do.

MopsiHuolto checks which stick your Deck takes — on an LCD, by its Controller ID — fits the matching genuine Valve stick and calibrates it before the Deck goes back. Diagnosis is free. The calculator on the service page shows the exact price for left or right, LCD or OLED, before anything is ordered.
