PS4 controller stick drift — what to try, what calibration can and can't do, and when the stick has to be replaced

PS4 controller drift is a worn or dirty stick. Reset, test, clean; calibration fixes only a steady offset. If drift stays, replace the soldered stick.

PS4 controller stick drift is a DualShock 4 reading input from a stick nobody is touching. The camera turns or your character walks away while your thumbs rest elsewhere. The fault is inside the stick module — dirt, wear or a tired spring. Three things are worth trying at home, in this order: reset the controller, test where the drift shows, and clean the stick. Calibration on a PC corrects only a stick that rests steadily off centre. If the drift survives, the stick module needs replacing, and on a DualShock 4 that means soldering.

NOTE
Key takeaways

Start with Sony's reset: a paper clip in the small hole on the back, held for at least five seconds, then re-pair over USB. Cleaning sometimes helps when dirt is the cause; done from outside, it mostly moves the dust around. The PS4 has no stick calibration menu — calibration runs on a computer, in Chrome, Edge or Opera. It fixes only a steady off-centre rest point, can make a drifting stick worse, and on a DualShock 4 a saved one can't be rolled back. The stick module is soldered to the board, so replacing it needs a soldering station.

What PS4 controller stick drift is, and what's worn

Drift is a physical fault in the stick module — dirt, a worn potentiometer or a worn spring, as the DualShock Tools FAQ puts it. The DualShock 4 uses the same Alps joystick hardware as the DualSense, the Xbox One controller and the Switch Pro controller, according to iFixit. Each stick holds two potentiometers at right angles, one per axis, and in each one a small wiper runs over a printed carbon track.

iFixit names four ways that goes wrong: the wiper wears the track, the centring spring stretches and settles at a new neutral point, the plastic loosens, and dust gets inside the module. When our technician opens a drifting DualShock 4, what turns up is plain wear of the track on one of the stick's two potentiometers. Wear doesn't reverse; dirt sometimes comes out. The longer explanation is in our guide to DualSense stick drift — the stick module is the same, so the part about what wears applies to the PS4 controller too.

Reset the controller first

Hold the reset button — inside a small hole on the back of the controller — for at least five seconds with an unfolded paper clip, then pair the controller again over USB. A reset is Sony's first troubleshooting step for any DualShock 4 problem. Sony's full procedure:

  • —Turn off and unplug the PS4.
  • —Disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
  • —Find the tiny hole on the back of the controller — the reset button is inside it.
  • —Press and hold the button with an unfolded paper clip for at least five seconds.
  • —Connect the controller to the PS4 with the USB cable and press the PS button to pair it again.

Sony doesn't say what a reset changes inside the controller. If the drift is still there after it, Sony's page sends you to choose "Button or analogue stick issue" and on to its repair options. It gives no stick-specific fix of its own.

Test the stick outside the game

Check the drift in more than one place before you change anything. A dead zone makes a game ignore small stick movements, so a slight drift can hide in a game and still show elsewhere. Watch the PS4 menus, then a second game. If the camera or cursor moves with your thumbs off the sticks in both, it's the stick.

Don't look for a fix in the PS4's own menus. The PS4 User's Guide lists four controller settings under Settings > Devices > Controllers: speaker volume, vibration, light bar brightness and, for second-generation controllers, the communication method. None of them calibrates a stick.

The controller also works away from the console. Sony supports the DualShock 4 on a Windows PC over a micro-USB cable, and over Bluetooth on Android 10, iOS 13, iPadOS 13, macOS Catalina, tvOS 13 and later. Drift that follows the controller to another device is in the controller, not the PS4.

Cleaning a PS4 controller stick: when it helps

Cleaning fixes DualShock 4 drift only when dirt caused it, and it works properly only with the controller open. iFixit reports some success with compressed air, contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, but warns that without taking the module apart you're mostly moving the dust around. Dust can wander back in, and the stick keeps making more of it. No software can work around dirt.

A community guide on iFixit shows how to open and clean the stick without soldering. It is written for the left stick and rated Moderate, at 20–45 minutes:

  • —Take the controller fully apart, down to the board.
  • —Gently pry open the two potentiometer housings on the stick. Go slowly — they can snap off the board.
  • —Lift out the white disc from each housing with tweezers.
  • —Clean the inside of each housing with a cotton bud dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol.
  • —Let it dry for 5–10 minutes, then reassemble.

If cleaning doesn't stop the drift, or it keeps coming back, the module has to be replaced. Worn parts "need to be replaced to fix the drift", as the authors of the calibration tool put it.

Calibrating a PS4 controller on a PC: what it can and can't do

On a DualShock 4, calibration corrects one fault only: a stick that rests steadily off centre because of a tired spring. It needs a computer, a USB cable and Chrome, Edge or Opera; the PS4 can't do it. It won't fix looseness or a worn spot on the track, as iFixit puts it. On a stick that already drifts, skip it: a saved DualShock 4 calibration can only be overwritten, never rolled back.

Our free calibration tool runs on DualShock Tools, an open-source project that supports the official DualShock 4 with centre and range calibration. The steps for centre and range are the same as on the DualSense and are in how to calibrate a PS5 controller. What's different on a PS4 controller:

  • —Fine-tuning and the quick test menu are DualSense-only. A DualShock 4 gets centre and range.
  • —Unsaved changes are lost when you unplug, so test before you press save.
  • —Clone controllers can't be calibrated. The tool can tell a fake DualShock 4 from a real one.
  • —The tool sends undocumented factory commands over USB. Sony doesn't endorse it.

The tool's own authors are blunt: it cannot fix stick drift, and calibrating worn sticks may help for a while but may also make things worse. Its real job is setting up a new stick after a replacement. A bigger dead zone is the other stopgap: the game ignores small movements, so slight drift stops showing. As the stick gets worse you have to keep raising it, and fine control goes with it.

Replacing the stick module: a soldering job

Replacing the stick module is the real fix on a PS4 controller, because the worn part comes out. On a DualShock 4 that part is soldered to the controller board, so the job needs a soldering station. iFixit's replacement guide rates it Difficult, 30 minutes to an hour.

  • —Every contact has to be desoldered before the old stick comes out, and iFixit warns it takes practice.
  • —The holes then have to be cleared of old solder before the new module goes in.
  • —The vibration motor wires are soldered to the board too, and can break off while it's out.
  • —One replacement part fits both generations, CUH-ZCT1 and CUH-ZCT2. The model number is on the back of the controller.
  • —iFixit's replacement part is the internal potentiometer assembly only; the outer cap isn't included.

A new stick needs calibrating after fitting. The calibration profile is stored on the controller board, not in the stick, and brand-new sticks vary, so an uncalibrated one can drift out of the box. Magnetic sticks — Hall Effect and TMR — are also sold for the DualShock 4: a sensor reads a magnet from a distance instead of a wiper scraping a track, so there is no sensor contact to wear. Their springs and plastic still age, and they get calibrated the same way after fitting.

FAQ

Can you calibrate a PS4 controller on the PS4?+

No. The PS4's controller settings cover volume, vibration, light bar brightness and the communication method, and nothing else. Calibration runs on a computer over USB, in Chrome, Edge or Opera.

Does resetting a PS4 controller fix stick drift?+

It's Sony's first step, and it costs nothing to try. Sony doesn't say it recentres a stick. If the drift is still there after the reset and re-pairing, test the controller on a PC: drift that follows it there is in the stick.

Will calibration fix a drifting DualShock 4?+

Only a steady offset from the centring spring. The calibration tool itself says it can't fix drift and can make a drifting stick worse. On a DualShock 4 a saved calibration can only be overwritten, not undone.

Does one replacement stick fit every DualShock 4?+

The standard one does. iFixit's replacement stick lists every board revision of both generations, CUH-ZCT1 and CUH-ZCT2 — seven boards, JDM-001 to JDM-055 — and also fits the Xbox One controller.

When PS4 controller drift stops being a home fix

Once a reset and a clean haven't stopped the drift, the stick module has to be replaced. That's desoldering and soldering on the controller board, with the vibration motor wires to watch. If you don't have a soldering station and some practice with it, hand it over.

MopsiHuolto fits Hall Effect modules in both DualShock 4 generations, CUH-ZCT1 and CUH-ZCT2: the worn module comes out, the new one goes in and is calibrated before the controller goes back. €30 for one stick, €45 for both. Bring it in, or send it by post.

How to calibrate a PS5 controller — console settings, a PC tool, the reset button, and when it won't help

The PS5 has no stick calibration menu for the DualSense. Calibrate it on a PC over USB in Chrome or Edge, reset it with a pin — and know when it's worn.
