This one wasn't for games. A customer needed a machine for video editing and AI — neural-network training and inference — where the load isn't a two-hour gaming session but a render or a training run that goes for hours, sometimes overnight. Two things followed from that: it had to stay stable under sustained full load, and it had to stay quiet, because it lives on a desk someone works next to all day. Same arrangement as any build here — the customer buys the parts, we build at €60/h. The parts came to about €4,000. The build ran about €480. Here is the reasoning behind both.

A workstation is a different problem from a gaming rig. The work here was video editing and AI, so the priorities were core count and memory for the editing timeline, CUDA and VRAM for the neural-network side, and — unusually — silence and longevity over looks. That last part drove more decisions than you'd think: no LCD screen, no liquid cooling, no RGB. A pump is one more thing to fail on a machine meant to run for years, and a whining fan during a four-hour export is a tax you pay every single day. So it went air-cooled, Noctua throughout, tuned for a fan curve you can barely hear.

The RTX 4090 is here for CUDA and 24 GB of VRAM — that is what makes this an AI box, not the CPU's job. The 16-core 5950X and 128 GB handle the editing timeline and keep large models and long exports in memory. The cooling is deliberately air, not liquid: a Noctua NH-D15 has no pump to fail and no coolant to leak near €4,000 of parts, and it will still be quiet in five years. The DDR4 and the NVMe are up a little on 2026's memory shortage, but nowhere near the DDR5 spike a newer platform would have cost.
What the €60/h did
Same rate as any build, about eight hours end to end — roughly €480. On a workstation the hours go to different places than on a gaming rig: less cable-management-for-looks, more making sure it is stable and silent under the exact load it will actually see.

A gaming crash costs you a match. A render or a training run that dies at hour six costs you a day — and if the memory isn't truly stable at 128 GB, that is exactly where it dies. The €480 buys a machine that has been proven under a real render before it leaves the bench, not one that merely posts and boots into Windows.
Why we bill by the hour, not a slice of the parts
The same rule as every build here. A percentage-of-parts build fee punishes you for buying good components — the same screws cost more because your GPU was expensive. €60/h is €60/h. You buy your own parts wherever they're cheapest, we never mark them up, and you pay for the hours the job honestly takes, quoted before we start. On this workstation that was around €480. On a simple build it's an hour or two.

Why air cooling on a build this expensive?+
Because it's a workstation, not a showpiece. An air cooler like the NH-D15 matches a good 360 mm liquid cooler on a 5950X, has nothing to leak or wear out, and is dead silent. On a machine meant to run heavy loads for years, one fewer failure point next to €4,000 of parts is the right trade. If a customer wants a screen-lit liquid loop, we'll happily build that too — this one wanted reliable and quiet.
Isn't a 5950X and a 4090 an odd pairing in 2026?+
For gaming, maybe. For this work, no. The 4090 does the AI and the GPU-accelerated editing; the 5950X's 16 cores handle the CPU side of the render, with 128 GB of RAM behind them. The customer already had an AM4 platform in mind, and the money was better spent on the GPU and memory than on chasing the newest socket. Built to the work, not to a benchmark chart.
What did the build cost versus the parts?+
Parts, about €4,000. Build labour, about €480 — roughly eight hours at €60/h. That is around twelve per cent of the hardware to have it sourced right, assembled, tuned silent and proven stable under a real render. On a machine someone earns a living with, that's the cheapest insurance on the invoice.
