These are the four reasons PS4s end up on our bench. Any one of them means the cooling has fallen behind — the longer you wait, the more permanent the damage.
Console powers off mid-game with a thermal warning, especially in demanding titles. The APU has crossed its safe-temperature limit and is protecting itself.
Games that used to run smoothly now stutter or freeze. The APU is throttling — dropping clocks to stay below the thermal ceiling, at the cost of performance.
Fan howls in menus and gets unbearable in games. Dust restricts airflow, so the fan has to spin much harder to move the same air.
Grey buildup around intake and exhaust grilles. On a PS4 that's been used 5+ years without service, the heatsink fins are usually packed solid.
An older console is harder to save.
PS4 hardware is 8+ years old. The longer it runs hot, the closer it gets to a permanent failure that no cleaning can reverse.
Running at the thermal limit month after month degrades the APU die. Once the chip starts producing visual artefacts or refusing to boot, no cleaning brings it back.
Repeated heat cycles crack the solder under the APU and GPU memory. This is the failure mode behind 'PS4 won't turn on after a long session'.
Heat warps the disc drive's plastic chassis over time. Disc-read errors that started intermittent become permanent.

Why does my PS4 shut down during games?+
It's the thermal protection cutting the power before the APU damages itself. Inside, the heatsink fins are clogged with dust and the original thermal paste has dried out, so the APU can't shed heat fast enough. The console hits its temperature limit and shuts off to survive. A full cleaning + thermal paste service fixes this in 9 out of 10 cases.
My PS4 sounds like a jet engine — is it broken?+
Almost never broken — it's the cooling system asking for help. Dust restricts airflow, so the fan ramps up to compensate. We see this all the time on PS4s that haven't been opened in 4+ years. After a full clean and fresh thermal paste, the fan drops out of earshot and the console runs in the background again.
PS4 has started lagging — is it the disc drive?+
Usually no. PS4 'lag' is almost always thermal throttling — when the APU gets too hot, it drops its own clocks to cool down, which shows up as stutters and frame drops. The fix is the same as for shutdowns: full cleaning and thermal paste replacement to restore proper cooling.
Do you fix all PS4 models?+
Yes — original Fat (CUH-1000/1100/1200), Slim (CUH-2000/2100/2200) and Pro (CUH-7000/7100/7200). The Fat is the most demanding because of its dual-fan layout; the Pro hides thermal issues behind a bigger heatsink, which is why owners often delay cleaning until the GPU is already damaged. We service all three.
Is liquid metal worth it on PS4?+
No — and we don't offer it on PS4. Sony designed the PS4 thermal stack for thermal paste, not liquid metal. The motherboard doesn't have the protective foam dam needed for safe LM containment, and the temperature gains over fresh paste are minimal. Thermal paste is the right tool for this console.
How long does the service take?+
Cleaning + paste is about 1 hour. Cleaning + paste + thermal pads is about 90 minutes. We work on-site at your home or office across Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kerava — bring out a kettle, we'll bring back your console.
Will this void any Sony warranty?+
Most PS4s are well past the original Sony warranty (consoles bought before 2022 are out). For those, opening the chassis is no longer a concern. We provide our own 90-day warranty on the work we do — the paste, pads, and the cleaning itself.
